2016 Season Highlights
As we eagerly await the approaching trout season on Lough Rowan and many of the other western lakes many of us spend our time either tying flies or trying our hand at pike or coastal species. It is at times like these I like to reflect on the season gone by. The personal bests broken. The monsters that got away. The newly discovered yet "secret" river or lake that you cannot wait to return to.... One angler who had a 2016 to remember was David O Donovan from Dublin. David travels all over the country for his fishing and sat aloft his trusty kayak captured a magnificient specimen Esox in 2016. Tipping the scales at over 23lbs David kindly sent us the images of his superb hen fish to share with you. David is a regular visitor to our fishery although the location of this leviathan shall remain a mystery and rightly so!
Trout fishing on Lough Rowan was excellent judging by the reports and quality of fish that were returned by our members. We are continuing to attract new memberships and day-ticket anglers to our fishery as word of the excellent angling on offer spreads amongst the fishing community. Pike fishing as always is exemplary be it from bank, boat or float tube and offers our members and dedicated esox hunters great sport during the closed trout season. Below are a few images of Melvin angler Gene Haran and pal who experienced some fantastic trout fishing on a visit to Lough Rowan last year.
Micheal Prendergast Memorial Cup 2016
One of the annual highlights of the angling season for RSDAC members is the lively competition scene which gives our members the opportunity to test their skills against their friends and rivals on the many watercourses in our immediate area. The Micheal Prendergast Memorial Trophy which is held each year on Lough Rowan, our very own mixed trout/pike fishery, is always a great social occasion with anglers hoping to get amongst the prizes and enjoy a day of superb fishing in beautiful surroundings. 2016 was no different with many familiar faces wetting their lines and casting their flies to tempt the wily trout of Lough Rowan. It was local angler Sir George Taylor who came out as top rod on the day with a impressive tally of both brown and rainbow trout. Partnered in his boat by Charlie Richards, himself an accomplished angler, this mixture of youth and experience located many feeding fish and capitalised when the opportunity presented itself landing fish on each drift at the pumphouse end of the fishery. Other succesful anglers on the day were Ollie Gallagher, Miko Wynne and Noel Moran. RSDAC would like to thank Martin Prendergast and family for their continued support and look forward to the 2017 event.
Mohill Summer Camp 2016
Pictured above are images taken from last year's visit by a party of young children from a Summer-camp in Mohill. The enthusiastic young kids spent a few hours at Lough Rynn outside Mohill and enjoyed games, boat trips and many other exciting activities. Events like this allow children to appreciate the outdoor environment and learn essential skills such as safe watercraft and angling practice. Many thanks to the group-leaders and RSDAC members who offered assistance on the day.
LOUGH ROWAN STOCKING 2016
Foróige Group visit Lough Rowan
RSDAC recently were delighted to welcome some enthusiastic young anglers from a local Fóroige group to Lough Rowan. Club members were on hand to provide guided angling from both shore and aboard the RSDAC fleet of club boats. It didn't take long for these novice anglers to capture some of the resident Rowan rainbow trout with some lovely specimens caught on the day. Club officials provided food and refreshments for our guests who we hope will become the anglers of the future and provide a much needed injection of youth and vitality into our sport. Thanks to all club members who gave up their time to make this event possible. Tight lines to all.
